    Chest
    Scope of Services
The Chest diseases department provides state-of-the-art care in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of various pulmonary diseases including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, tuberculosis, pleural effusion, interstitial lung disease, lung cancer and respiratory failure.
We provide in and out patient services in assessment, diagnosing and treatment of cases presenting with respiratory manifestations, early diagnosis of chest diseases, estimation of pulmonary disability in Occupational lung diseases and pulmonary evaluation during check up program and before major operations.
There is excellent back up from other departments to provide comprehensive pulmonary diagnostics as radiological examinations (x-rays, computed tomographic scans, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound), laboratory investigations (sputum analysis, immunological and pathological examinations). We share with our colleagues in the intensive care unit in the follow up and management of patients with respiratory insufficiency or failure.
Our department is equipped and staffed to perform a wide range of tests including pulmonary function tests, fiberoptic bronchoscopy, pleural fluid aspiration, sleep study and other tests.
One of our unique services in collaboration with respiratory care department is pulmonary rehabilitation program in which we instruct the patients for the optimum way to understand their clinical conditions, perform respiratory exercises to ensure good health status following their discharge from hospitals.
In the near future we are planning to establish smoking clinic to support our patients in quitting smoking.
    Activities & Facilities :

    • The Pulmonary Function laboratory:
State of Art pulmonary function laboratory with facilities for: lung volumes, spirometry, diffusing capacity and evaluating patients for oxygen home care requirements.
These investigations will help in the diagnosis of cases of bronchial asthma, COPD, interstitial and occupational lung diseases with evaluation of its severity, response to treatment and follow up of cases. As well as respiratory physiological evaluation during check up program and before major operations.

    • Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy
Our pulmonary physicians have vast experience in fiberoptic bronchoscopy for diagnosing lung diseases.
Bronchoscopy is the gold standard test for seeing inside the airway. The test can be performed to diagnose lung diseases or locate the source of a problem by visualizing the throat, larynx, trachea and lungs and collecting tissue samples for biopsy. The test is usually done under local anesthesia as a day care procedure that involves passing a thin tube called a bronchoscope through the nose or mouth, passing the vocal cords and down the airway as far as necessary. Bronchoscopy can also be used to remove objects or mucus blocking the airway or to destroy growths in the airway with aid of interventional procedures

    • Thoracentesis:
The removal of pleural fluid for diagnostic or treatment purposes.

    • Sleep Study:
Our specialists provide supportive and innovative treatment of variable sleep disorders. Patients who stay overnight in a sleep laboratory are monitored while asleep using polysomnography (PSG), which consists of a simultaneous recording of multiple physiologic parameters, related to sleep and wakefulness.
It is indicated in those patients who are suspected to have sleep related respiratory disturbances (e.g. snoring, sleep apnea and sleep disordered breathing) or other sleep disorders. PSG is used to assess and quantify the presence and severity of such disturbances and their effect on oxygenation, cardiac status and sleep continuity.
